Sea Rising Film Loupe (Taken from film stills)
These repetitive images of the ocean swelling and receding are from an experimental video I made and were taken on The Big Island of Hawaii in the same spot where scientists who study climate change record daily the amount of degrees in which the ocean rises and warms. It has risen two feet in only the past few years indicating that the warming trend of the ocean is at it’s all time high. We are in a state of profound crisis with Global warming. This series documents this predicament and gives the viewer a sense of vertigo as it is intended to exhibit this rapid sea level rising and warming as we are in a state of climate emergency. Despite the work’s urgency, the compelling images are strikingly beautiful when exhibited and represent a universal theme on both conscious and subconscious levels as we all have overwhelming dreams of tidal waves, yet we all think of paradise as being seaside and swimming in a tranquil ocean. I have printed the entire series on glass. Each image is 30×30 inches and when exhibited together they present a striking visual experience that implies imminent danger and emotional upheaval on one level, and yet the repetitive nature inherent to the redundancy of the images brings calm. One art critic wrote about them as if they were a “passageway for travel, with the sailor commanding and navigating an epic journey across the stellar sea”, which reminds me of Hemingway not only because of The Old Man and The Sea, but because of the epic hurricane that hit his hometown of Key West, Florida demolishing it and taking out nearly a third of the town’s residents as the sea is innately and simultaneously both serene and violent. What has the capacity to bring us peace and joy yet also what has the capacity for harm is the subtext, in conjunction with the very serious state of global warming we are living in is the foundation of the work.
